일본 돗토리 현 요나고(Yonago)시에 자리한 YM Nursery는 바다와 산으로 둘러싸인, 풍성한 자연환경의 유아 교육 시설이다. 기본 컨셉은 ‘자연을 느끼고 감수성을 키울 수 있는 공간(Feel nature, grow sensitivity)’으로 이에 걸맞게 어린 아이들이 일상에서 드넓은 자연을 느끼며 소통하고, 건강하게 생활할 수 있도록 공간을 설계했다. 디자인 팀은 컨셉과 기능에 모두 충실한 결과물을 위해 천연 소재, 지역 환경, 익숙한 자재 사용이라는 3가지 포인트를 기반으로 공간을 기획했다.

지역의 성격과 주변 환경을 반영해 설계된 YM Nursery는 기존에 자리했던 유치원 건물의 역사를 담기 위해 오래된 건물의 자재를 활용했다. 기본적으로 따뜻함을 가진 자재들은 오래되고 편안한 옛 풍경을 아스라이 떠오르게 한다. 이에 YM Nursery에는 무조건 현대적이고 새로운, 세련된 느낌의 자재를 사용하기보다 바닥과 벽, 천장 등에 익숙하고 친밀한 소재를 사용해 안정적인 무드의 공간을 완성했다. 주변 환경의 특징을 반영한 것으로는 입구에 자리한 커다란 바위를 그대로 둔다든가 후지산(富士山)에서 피는 꽃 이름을 학급 이름에 적용한 것 등이 눈에 띈다.

어린이의 발달과 성장, 자연과의 소통을 위해 가장 먼저 신경 쓴 부분은 천연 재료로 원목, 스틸 등을 사용했다는 점이다. 특히, 원목을 메인 자재로 선택해 피톤치드로 가득한 숲 속에 머무는 듯한 느낌을 조성하고자 했다. 이를 통해 아이들은 여러 종류의 천연 소재를 손과 발로 만지고 느끼며 감각적인 성장을 해나갈 수 있고, 디자이너는 이러한 환경이 아이들의 풍부한 상상력을 자극하고 두뇌 발달에 긍정적인 영향을 주길 바랐다.

YM Nursery는 아이들의 생활 환경과 건강, 자연과의 소통에 집중하는 것뿐만 아니라 아이들이 머물며 언제나 즐겁고 행복할 수 있는 공간을 추구했다. 자유롭게 뛰놀 수 있는 마당부터 미니 풀장, 놀이방, 식당, 화장실까지 내외부를 구성하는 모든 공간들을 아이들이 몸으로 부딪히고 머리로 생각하며 놀 수 있는 곳으로 완성했다. 특히, 1층과 2층을 연결하는 수단으로 미끄럼틀과 미니 정글짐을 제작해 실내에서도 활동적이고 신나게 생활할 수 있도록 했다.

This is a nursery project in Yonago, Tottori, Japan. This site is surrounded by the environment rich in nature, sea as well as mountain. However, the environment of the former nursery is unvarying and not sensuous, same as general. Children couldn’t feel nature in spite of living with rich nature. Hence, we put it on the design concept, “Feel nature, grow sensitivity”. For children to feel nature in daily life, we focused on materials. Each material is meaningful and are chosen for children, which can be seen in the following 3 approaches. The possibilities of materials are discovered here. First, to make children feel more nature, we use many natural materials. But it’s not only for this reason. The sensible stimulus taken by touching natural materials by hand and feet, stimulate their brain and it will have a good influence on their development. we also aimed to appeal to children’s sensitivity and development. Additionally, in floor signs we use 4 kinds of metals. Each material has each sense of touching. Hence children can touch and feel many kinds of natural materials, their sensitivity will be grown, and also their imagination and brain development as well. Second, materials can give children chances to learn their local. The mud of the wall at the entrance and the rocks in gabion surrounding the building are partly from local. Each of class name is named for the unique flowers which are bloomed in Mt. Daisen near this site. As children get older, the flowers of their class name are bloomed at the higher point in the mountain. With these flowers as motifs, the class signs are designed. Thus, children can get many chances to know about the local in their daily life with many natural materials. Third, to tell the history of this nursery, we reused some materials from old buildings. Rocks in the gabion are some from the local, and the others are from concrete wastes at the demolition of the former nursery. And the after-school day care center is built next to the nursery, whose floor, wall and ceiling are made of floor materials used in the old nursery.
